Toxoplasma gondii

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoal (single-celled) parasite and belongs to the family of Sarcocystidae.

An infection with this pathogen leads to toxoplasmosis, typically producing no symptoms. In immunocompromised patients, it may cause influenza-like symptoms and swelling of the lymph nodes. Pregnant women should take special preventive measures as the pathogen may be transmitted to the foetus.

Transmission mainly occurs via contaminated water and food respectively.

For a successful inactivation of parasites, specific disinfectants effective against parasites are required.
