In Europe, hygienic handwashing is an approved method to clean the hands by using an antimicrobial wash lotion. In contrast to hygienic hand disinfection, this procedure can only be carried out at a washbasin. The efficacy requirements according to European standards are lower than compared to hygienic hand disinfection.
In Germany, hygienic handwashing is predominantly used for areas that also require the cleaning of hands, for example, in food processing and canteen kitchens.
